One of Uganda's more popular parks, Murchison covers 3,840 square km and is one of the few parks in the country where you can spot Rothchild's giraffe (the only other park is Kidepo in the north). The Falls were discovered in 1870 by an explorer called Sir Samuel Baker and were named after the President of the National Geographic Society, who sponsored his expedition. The park offers a variety of ways in which to see its abundant wildlife, against the stunning backdrop of the Nile. The impressive waterfall itself is one of the most significant features on the river as it heads towards the Mediterranean. The plains are dotted with exotic Borassus Palms which are a particular habitat for Ugandan Kob; you can also expect to see a parade of Elephant, Lion, Topi, Buffalo and Warthog, to name a few.
There is also an option to take a scenic launch cruise along the river, to the base of the falls. Along this 17km stretch of river are Elephant, Hippo, Buffalo, Waterbuck and an abundance of Crocs! The birdlife is also prolific, and includes the enigmatic and unique 'dinosaur bird', the Shoebill Stork. The boat trip climaxes at the foot of the falls, where the river explodes through a 7 metre cleft in the rock, thundering down a drop of approximately 43 metres.
Wake up to the trumpeting of Elephants and the thundering of the mighty Nile!
There are a number of activities available from the lodge:
Boat Launch Trip: take a leisurely 3 hour boat trip to the foot of the falls and watch out for hippos, crocs, buffalo, elephants and antelope. The lodge can supply drinks and a packed lunch upon request.
Drive to the Top of Murchison Falls: Watch as the Nile River explodes through a narrow ravine 43 metres deep, crowned by an almost permanent rainbow which has become a trademark of the Falls. For the more adventurous, there is a steep pathway leading down to the froth and roar below.
Game drives: Take a game drive and meet warthogs, lions, elephants and buffalo. Murchison Falls National Park is also one of only 2 parks in Uganda which is home to giraffes. The lodge can supply drinks and a packed lunch upon request.
Walking Trails: Explore the banks of the Nile with our resident ornithologist guide and discover the abundance of beautiful birds in the region. With Uganda boasting 11% of the world's known bird species, you will be spoilt for choice!
Sport Fishing: Pop down to 'Crocodile Alley' and try your hand at a spot of fishing. The aim is to bring in a Nile Perch which can sometimes weigh in at 70kg! Fishing permits, equipment and boat hire are organised through the Uganda Wildlife Authority - this can be arranged in advance at the Lodge.
Village Walks: Visit Mubaku Village and gain a unique insight into the lives of the local community . Sip tea with the ladies or plough the fields and experience the daily toil of traditional farming. These activities are coordinated by the Earthworks Foundation who also facilitate additional income-generating activities for the village so that they directly benefit from you visiting Nile Safari Lodge.
African Bush Dining: Nile Safari Lodge has several prime locations for that extra special dining experience. The lodge staff will arrange the perfect, private setting and special menus will be prepared by our restaurant.
