Batwa Cultural Experience

If you are visiting south western Uganda to trek Mountain Gorillas, take a moment to consider extending your stay in Bwindi to try out a special activity. The Batwa have a rich culture which goes back  at least 4,000 years. These ancient dwellers of the forest were displaced from their homeland in the early 1990's following UNESCO World Heritage Site status, in order to protect the endangered Mountain Gorillas. (Gorillas and snakes are considered taboos and were never taken for food but because gorillas share 98% of our DNA, this makes them susceptible to human disease).

Since then, 100 acres of land have been acquired adjacent to Bwindi Impenetrable Park, enabling the Batwa to pass on the legends, stories and skills which so define them, onto their children. You too can share this unique opportunity.

Your trip will start with an hour long hike through the forest past stunning vistas. Along the way, you will watch demonstrations of how the Batwa used to live in the forest, how they use medicinal plants, and how they hunt and gather. You will also find out about the delicate fare on offer in the forest, including wild honey, yams and mushrooms, as well as visiting traditional dwellings and trying out a spot of dancing! Finally, why not try shooting with a bow and arrow and joining a mock hunting party?

This hands-on experience will open your eyes to another world - that of one of Uganda's longest surviving tribes. It will also show you what other wonders Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has to offer, in the heart of gorilla land.
